Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010

A great one for autograph and official document enthusiasts, offered here is the first NHL Standard Player's Contract signed by Glen Sather. Elected to the Hall of Fame as a builder, Slats went on to sign plenty other deals on behalf of the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers. His original signature appears on the bottom right of the reverse of his 1964-65 contract with the Detroit Red Wings for his first pro season. Sather, a junior star with the Edmonton Oil Kings, had 19 goals and 48 points for the Memphis Wings of the CPHL, earning a salary of $4,750. The contract states that he would have made $5,500 if he had played in the AHL that season. Though moot since he never played for the Red Wings, the NHL salary he would have earned is ambiguous because while "Eight thousand five hundred" is typed out in full, the adjacent line has a dollar amount of "$8,000". Regardless, he earned another $1,500 as a signing bonus. League president Clarence Campbell's original signature appears on the front along with an Oct. 16, 1964 date stamp from the NHL central registry.
