Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/16/2010
The 1941-42 Toronto Maple Leafs remain the only team ever to rally from a three-game deficit in the Stanley Cup finals to win the championship. Featured here is a rare set of 23 original studio photos sent by the team to members of that incredible Cup championship team. This set belonged to Hall of Fame forward Dave "Sweeney" Schriner, who went on to win a second Stanley Cup with the Maple Leafs in 1945. These vintage original photos from Alexandra Studio come along with the mailing envelope. "Mr Dave Shriner (sic), Calgary, Alta" is handwritten in black ink across the face of the original Alexandra Studio envelope with five cents worth of cancelled stamps and a 1942 Toronto postmark. Schriner, who was inducted into the HHOF in 1962, appears on a lightly yellowed print that has pin holes in each of its four corners and was obviously displayed with pride. The rest of the 8 1/2" x 6 1/2" studio prints look like they came out of a time capsule, with Apps, Broda, Drillon, Stanowski, Goldham and the rest of the team featured in uniform in individual studio poses, along with a smiling shot of coach Hap Day and Conn Smythe in his RAF uniform. "Alexandra Studio, News Photos for News Papers, Toronto, Canada" is stamped on the back of each original print. Obtained directly from the Schriner family, this amazing 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs photo set comes with a letter of authenticity.
