This Bobby Orr goal puck from early in the 1973-74 campaign was one of 32 biscuits lodged in the back of the net by the legendary Boston Bruins defenceman that season. As part of the shortlived NHL goal puck program, a round label was placed on the puck with team name and that of the player who scored the goal ("Bobby Orr"), along with the date - October 21st, 1973 - and a code, in this case "BB-2-027" for Boston Bruins, "2" for second year of the goal puck program, and "027" for the Bruins' 27th goal of the season. The pucks were sold to the public but the program fell out of favor with the players quickly when they could only look on helplessly as linesmen gathered in their milestone pucks for public consumption. The program lasted only two seasons. Goal pucks were sold for regular season and playoff games. For the 1972-73 season, there were 4,088 regular season goals and 231 playoff goals. For the 1973-74 season, there were 3,989 regular season goals and 219 playoff goals. As is unfortunately the case with the majority of the pucks from this remarkable initiative, the original certificate issued by the NHL is nowhere to be found. [red] Addendum; Take notice that the original certificate issued by the NHL is included.[/red]
