Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/16/2010
Striking original artwork dates back to the 1930s when Montreal Maroon center Russ Blinco was forging his reputation as one of the cleanest players in hockey. Blinco is said to be one of the first NHL players to wear eyeglasses while playing, with this work by artist Gene Mack including a caption that reads "Off the ice he's very near sighted BUT in games the cages look as big as this to him." There's also "He's the Connie Mack of hockey - he never uses cuss words." Blinco spent five seasons toiling for the Maroons before completing his big-league career with the Black Hawks in 1938-39. In 268 regular season games he had just 24 penalty minutes and played an important role in the Maroons' Stanley Cup triumph in 1935. In its original wooden frame, the formidable one-of-a-kind display, characteristic of the era, measures approximately 19" by 21" and will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the family of Russ Blinco.
