A tremendous piece of Stanley Cup and Montreal Maroons' history is this exquisite medal presented to Maroon left winger Russell Blinco after the underdog Montreal squad captured Lord Stanley's silverware in the spring of 1935. After scoring narrow victories over the Black Hawks and Rangers in two-game-total-goals series, the Maroons met the regular season champion Maple Leafs in the first all-Canadian Cup final since 1926. As he was previously in the playoffs, goaltender Alex Connell was sensational in foiling Toronto, allowing just four goals as the Maroons swept the Leafs in three straight games, the first two at Maple Leaf Gardens. After an opening 3-2 overtime win on a Dave Trottier goal, it was Blinco who scored the game-winner in a 3-1 victory, before a clinching 4-1 win on Montreal Forum ice, with Baldy Northcott scoring the Cup-winner. Not long after, Maroon team members received fantastic mementos to commemorate their achievement. A one-inch in diameter gold medal, with its original black ribbon and clip, features two hockey players in action and "Stanley Cup Winners" on the front, while the back is engraved "Montreal Maroons ? R Blinco ? 1934-35" just above where "14K Birks" is stamped. In impossible-to-hope-for-nicer condition, the medal is still housed in its original blue velvet-covered Birks box and was obtained directly from Russ Blinco's son. A letter of authenticity from the family will accompany this remarkable keepsake.
