Glorious personal Stanley Cup trophy was presented to Swedish forward Willy Lindstrom to commemorate the Edmonton Oilers' first championship in 1984. This original NHL award is coveted by Oilers fans, who saw their squad of young superstars reach hockey's summit by knocking off the four-time champion New York Islanders in five games in the final, avenging a four-game sweep at the hands of Billy Smith, Trottier and company the previous spring. Wayne Gretzky led all playoff scorers with 13 goals and 35 points and Conn Smythe winner Mark Messier contributed 26 points. The Oilers swept Winnipeg in three straight, topped Calgary in seven, and swept Minnesota in four before Grant Fuhr's superb goaltending helped send them soaring past the Islanders. Lindstrom, who had won three WHA titles with the Winnipeg Jets, became the first player to win a Stanley Cup after winning an Avco World Trophy. (Kent Nilsson, who won the Cup with Edmonton in 1987, is the only other player who accomplished the feat in that order.) "Edmonton Oilers 1983-84" is engraved on the barrel with owner Peter Pocklington and GM/head coach Glen Sather listed immediately underneath, followed by the rest of the Oilers' staff. Gretzky's name appears first among players as team captain, followed by Anderson, Coffey, Conacher, Fogolin, Fuhr, Gregg, Huddy, Hughes, Hunter, Jackson, Kurri, Lindstrom, Linseman, Lowe, Lumley, McClelland, Messier, Moog, Pouzar and Semenko. Scratches surround the top of the barrel, particularly above the team name and to the immediate left. A nick through the "S" in Anderson's last name and a small scratch at the bottom rear are also to note. Those flaws aside, the trophy remains in excellent condition overall, with its original green felt bottom intact beneath the trophy's wood base. Willy Lindstrom's signed letter of authenticity accompanies this remarkable and historic Stanley Cup trophy, the Oilers dynasty's first of five in a seven-year span.
