Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
Even scarcer than signatures of their famous father, Lord Stanley, are those of his sons, the young men who had a part in Stanley donating the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, which quickly became known as the Stanley Cup. With siblings Arthur and Edward (along with William and Algernon) playing for the Ottawa Rideau Hall Rebels, Lord Stanley became thrilled with the game and offered to give a cup, to be awarded to the top amateur team in Canada. Arthur Stanley, who actually helped form the O.H.A. in 1890, has signed his name in fountain pen at the bottom section of a letter and it comes with the detached masthead listing him as the Chairman of the British Red Cross Society. His brother Edward, who would go on to become the 17th Earl of Derby after the death of his famous father in 1908, has signed as "Derby" across one of the two pages of this vintage Derby House letterhead, dated 8 February, 1928. Coveted Stanley signatures to tempt hockey historians.
