Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
Alexei Kovalev's signature stands out in this lot of two team-signed Russian international hockey sticks, including one from the 1992 Unified Team at the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville that defeated the Eric Lindros-led Canadian national team, claiming what would prove to be the Soviet empire's last hurrah in the wake of the stunning and swift fall of the Communist era. Kovalev has added the #30 he wore during the tournament to his blue marker signature among the members of the 1992 Olympic gold medal team that have signed this Russian language souvenir stick. Coaches Tikhonov and Mikhailov have also signed along with Yashin, Butsayev, Shtalenkov and Khmylev. Among the team's defensemen are familiar NHL names such as Kasparaitis, Malakhov, Zhitnik and Yushkevich. A fantastic Sergei Kapustin Koho gamer with its original tape job exhibits great use and has a number of Russian signatures with players' jersey numbers. Kapustin was a member of the 1981 Canada Cup champion Soviet team and it is likely that this wand with a wicked and highly illegal curve was used during the tournament.
