Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
The great Gordie Howe closed out his astounding career in a full season skatingfor the National Hockey League's Hartford Whalers in 1979-80. At age 51, Howe laced them up for all 80 regular season games, scoring 15 goals to help his Whalers along their first NHL playoff appearance. The customized CCM Super Tacks have been shortened at the back of the boot and then a heavier ankle section from another pair has been wrapped around the upper rear of each boot and fastened in place with thick, crude stitch work. Each skate has an aged and now-discolored number nine decal at the ankle and a faded black marker "9" on the bottom of the sole. Heavy wear throughout with at least a full season's worth of stick marks and skate slashes on the blades and boots. Included are the original leather Cooper skate blade guards, also marked with "9" in black marker. In size 10 with "11 '" marked on the steel blades. Many action photos from the period show Howe wearing identical skates and we will provide four digital images from the 1979-80 season picturing Gordie skating in game-action in this exact pair. Will come complete with a letter of provenance signed by Gordie Howe himself.
