Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009

Incredibly rare and attractive award presented to head athletic trainer John Wharton following the Detroit Red Wings' incredible 116-point performance over the 2001-02 season. This towering trophy, the first we have ever seen, is a silver plate design by Boffey of Montreal and closely approximates the look of the original presented by the league each year by the National Hockey League to the team that finishes with the most points in the league during the regular season. The Wings would capture this coveted award in 2002 and go on to win Stanley's grail that same year. At 16-inches in height, it rises above the miniature Stanley Cups presented to each player and stretches from the black wood base to the bowl at the pinnacle supported by three silver hockey sticks. A descriptive plaque at the base lists the trophy's title along with "John Wharton, Athletic Trainer, Detroit Red Wings, 2001-02". The Boffey sticker decorates the underside of the base, covered in brown felt. This trophy was first awarded back in 1986 and we do not believe that these miniatures were presented to all winning teams in the years since, making this one of the rarest of all of the player silverware. In excellent condition with some light patina to the finish. Obtained directly from John Wharton and will come with a letter of authenticity.
