This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
Regarded as one of hockey’s roughest defencemen, but also as one of its best, Sprague Cleghorn’s pro career spanned 17 years and included Stanley Cup victories with Ottawa (twice) and the Montreal Canadiens (1923-24). He started out as a forward but moved back to play defence alongside Cyclone Taylor in Renfrew, before starring for five seasons with the Montreal Wanderers for whom he once scored five goals in a game. Cleghorn’s rushing style led to him totaling 21 goals in 19 games with the Wanderers in 1914-15. Sprague Horace Cleghorn’s "S H Cleghorn" signature here is in bold pencil, with the cut measuring 5/8" x 2". It is not glued and perfect for matching up with a photo. Cleghorn was elected posthumously to the Hall in 1958 after having died two years earlier.
