Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009

The 1977-78 Montreal Canadiens won 59 games, lost 10 and tied 11 to finish the season with 129 points. They scored 359 goals and allowed only 183. Guy Lafleur led the league with 132 points, yet somehow each of those numbers was slightly inferior to those posted the previous season. Amazing! Left wing Yvon Lambert contributed 18 goals and 22 assists during the regular season as the Canadiens finished atop the NHL’s Prince of Wales conference for a third straight season. (Montreal tied with Buffalo in 1974-75 when both teams had 113 points, but the Sabres won the award by virtue of having two more wins.) This is the individual trophy that was presented by the league to Lambert. A plaque on the front of the wood base is engraved, "HRH Prince of Wales Trophy - Yvon Lambert", while another plaque on the back of the base has "NHL Champions - Montreal Canadiens - 1977-78" engraved on it. This miniature version of the league award features four hockey sticks supporting a narrow cup. To note, two of the three leaf fronds have broken off on top of the trophy’s removable lid. Otherwise the trophy and its wood base remain in excellent condition. Yvon Lambert’s signed letter of authenticity accompanies this fantastic hockey treasure.
