Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
As the story goes, at the venue for the men’s hockey games at the 2002 Olympic Games held in Salt Lake City, an ice attendant buried a Canadian "loonie" (one dollar coin) at centre ice for good luck. After Canada’s gold medal win, the coin was dug out and presented to team executive director Wayne Gretzky who smartly elevated the token to artifact status and donated it to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. To commemorate the charm and the Olympic achievement, Wayne Gretzky presented each player and staffer who helped Team Canada attain the gold medal with a specially-minted quarter-sized gold coin. This example, presented for good luck to Team Canada massage therapist Stewart Poirier, has the raised Maple Leaf on one side with the words "Canada" below and "Commit to Gold" above. The obverse holds the Hockey Canada logo with the wording "Olympic Games, Salt Lake City 2002". Good luck! From the personal collection of Stu Poirier with an accompanying letter of authenticity.
