Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009

Tantalizing, story-provoking piece commemorates Canada’s first Olympic gold medal in ice hockey in 50 years and was presented to former Oilers massage therapist Stu Poirier, who also handled the massage duties with Team Canada at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. The memorable final match at the games, with Canada defeating the United States 5-2, can be considered among the defining moments in Canada’s collective experience. Over 10 million Canadian viewers watched the Sunday afternoon game, making it the most-watched program in Canadian history. The game didn’t have the last minute heroics of the 1972 Canada-Russia Series or the 1987 Canada Cup, but its breathtaking pace from start to finish had the hockey world on the edge of its seat. Backstopped by Martin Brodeur, who made key saves, Canada, with a 3-2 lead, got the insurance goal it was looking for when Jarome Iginla beat Mike Richter with four minutes left. Another goal by tournament MVP Joe Sakic sealed the U.S.’s fate for good and a country, led by Team Canada architect Wayne Gretzky, felt multiple emotions; incredible joy yes, but also relief from the pressure which had built leading up to the competition and the frustration of past losses. Longtime hockey observers meanwhile couldn’t help but feel pleased that two classy veterans, Mario Lemieux and Steve Yzerman, were able to achieve Olympic glory in the twilight of their careers. We could write and write but hopefully have brought forth some special memories. This medal, only the second that we know of having been offered for public auction, differs from those presented to the players; it features the words "Gold Medalist", along with "2002 Olympics" and the Team Canada logo on one side, with the Salt Lake City Olympic logo on the other. Thick, heavy memento is the type awarded to staff members of Team Canada and is in gorgeous near mint condition and housed in the original presentation case. From the personal collection of Stu Poirier with an accompanying letter of authenticity. Outstanding!
