The story behind this ring recalls how a group of young veteran players, who had in past years supported scoring leader Wayne Gretzky as he led the team to four Cup triumphs, were able to reach the pinnacle of the hockey world without his help. Mark Messier, who will go down in hockey history as one of the greatest leaders of all-time, forged his reputation during the memorable championship run. After a 90-point regular season, the Oilers first had to come through with three straight wins to beat the Jets in a seven-game opening round series, before sweeping Gretz and the Kings and beating the Black Hawks in six to reach the finals against Boston. A triple overtime win in game one in the longest game in Cup finals history paved the way for a 4-games-to-1 win, Craig Simpson’s second period goal proving to be the Cup-winner in Edmonton’s 4-1 clinching victory at Boston Garden. Goaltender Bill Ranford’s playoff heroics earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy and Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Kevin Lowe, Charlie Huddy and Randy Gregg joined Messier in winning their fifth Stanley Cup rings as members of the Oilers. The table of this ring, presented to the team’s massage therapist Stewart Poirier, features five hefty solitaire diamonds swimming in a sea of smaller gems surrounded by the words "1990 Stanley Cup Champions". One shank has the raised "Poirier" with a sculpted Oilers logo and "M.T.". The opposite shank has "5 Stanley Cup Championships" with a raised image of the cup and "84, 85, 87, 88, 90" alongside a sculpted motivational "carrot". The interior of the band is stamped with the manufacturer’s hallmark and the 10K karat markings. In excellent condition. From the personal collection of Stu Poirier with an accompanying letter of authenticity and an additional appraisal document listing the replacement value and the weight of the ring at 31.20 grams. [red]Addendum; The ring is a size 9 3/4.[/red]
