One of the more competitive and colorful characters in NHL history, Conn Smythe built the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Maple Leaf Gardens. He was a fearless leader in an arena and on the battlefield in two world wars. Smythe was a Lieutenant of the 4th Division, 40th Battery, field artillery and received the Military Cross for his valued part in trench raids during WWI. In WWII, Major Smythe's "Sportsman's Battalion", also known as the 30th Battery of the 7th Toronto Regiment, included many pro sports athletes. Offered is Conn Smythe’s service decoration, known as the 1914-1918 War Medal, awarded to all allied combatants during the First World War. This "named" example is engraved with his name and rank of second lieutenant along the edge. Also included is the France and Germany Star medal, presented to Smythe for his service during the Second World War. Both are in excellent condition with attached ribbons.
