Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2009
Wonderful old store advertising sign promotes Draper-Maynard "Joe Malone" Hockey Tube Skates and features a photograph of Malone at the top left corner. One of hockey’s greatest goal scorers, he was known as "Phantom" Joe Malone because of his slick and polished style. And what numbers did that style produce! It’s tough to imagine anyone ever averaging over two goals a game as Malone did in the NHL’s inaugural 1917-18 season, scoring 44 times in just 20 games for the Montreal Canadiens. Joe’s single-game record of seven goals versus Toronto in 1920 is a record that also still stands. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1950, he died in May of 1969. Also pictured is Wildor LaRochelle of the Canadiens, winner of the Montreal Forum Speed Skating Contest in the professional category and Eddie Duclos who took top honors in the amateur class at the same event. The heavy cardstock sign is in very good condition with some minor staining and corner dings.
