Charlie "Chuck" Gardiner’s career and life were both far too short. Born in Scotland, Gardiner’s family arrived in Winnipeg when he was seven. He wasn’t a great skater so he ended up in goal and went on to become one of the all-time greats, backstopping a usually poor Chicago Black Hawks team for 7 seasons. His ultimate achievements came in 1933-34. Gardiner played for the All-Stars in the Ace Bailey Benefit Game, led the NHL in shutouts with 10 and won his 2nd Vezina Trophy. Although they scored fewer goals than any other team that season, the Hawks, mostly due to Gardiner’s exploits, captured the team’s first Stanley Cup. That summer Gardiner suffered a brain hemorrhage and died at age 29. His autograph is thus low in supply and high in demand. This gorgeous advertising display sign with attached stand-up back piece pictures Gardiner in his Hawks uniform with the title "Chuck Gardiner, Blackhawk Goal Tender and Captain". Best is the vintage fountain pen signature in Gardiner’s hand that runs up alongside the stick at the lower right. Although the autograph is faint against the grey backdrop of the ice, it is easily legible when held up to the light. The display remains in very good-plus condition and represents an excellent opportunity to add the signature of this hard-to-obtain deceased Hall of Fame netminder to your collection.
