Another fabulous offering featuring hockey and football legend Hobey Baker, this one dates to the phenom’s pre-university days at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. The Pennsylvania-born Baker spent two years at St. Paul’s before entering Princeton in 1910. It was a Christmas custom of St. Paul’s to rent the St. Nicholas rink in New York for two nights for hockey games against traditional opponents but when one team had to cancel out at the last minute in 1908, Baker and his buddies had to face St. Nick’s, composed mainly of ex-Harvard, Yale and Princeton stars. Even though the schoolboys were defeated 3-1, the papers reported how Baker and his mates had outplayed the New York champions and how Hobey was in the limelight, dominating the play, time and again bringing the crowd to its feet with long solo rushes. The yellow-haired 16-year-old was all over the ice, showing remarkable stick-handling, a deadly shot, exceptional speed and tireless endurance! Baker is pictured seated at center in this matte-finish photo, applied to a thick 5" by 10" cardboard mat, with "Kimball" the photographer’s name in the lower left corner and "Concord, N.H." in the right. Terrific view of vintage skates, sticks and uniforms, along with that of an early hockey superstar, make for a captivating piece. In excellent condition, the photo is a museum-worthy rarity.
