Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009

The Toronto Maple Leafs finished the 1933-34 season with the best record in the NHL, retaining the O’Brien Trophy as a result of their second straight first place finish in the Canadian Division. Eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, the Maple Leafs’ promising season had already been marred by a vicious stick-swinging attack by Boston’s Eddie Shore that ended Ace Bailey’s career and nearly cost the Toronto forward star his life. This outstanding Maple Leafs team photo from the outset of the fateful season shows Bailey seated in the front row, between manager Frank Selke and teammate Ken Doraty. Kilrea, Clancy, Day, Irvin, Smythe and Conacher are also in the front row with newly acquired goalie George Hainsworth standing on the right end. The Maple Leafs were a dominant regular season team throughout the 1930s, though other than the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 1932, the NHL’s top prize would elude them throughout the rest of the decade. Toronto lost in the finals six times between 1933 and 1940.
