The Detroit Red Wings began the road to becoming the most successful American NHL franchise with their first Stanley Cup win in 1935-36. The Red Wings finished first overall during the regular season and began the playoffs in spectacular fashion as Mud Bruneteau scored in the sixth overtime period of the first game of the semi-finals, a 1-0 win over the Maroons at the Montreal Forum. Normie Smith made 92 saves in the longest game in league history and posted another shutout in the second game. He extended his scoreless streak to 248 minutes as Detroit swept the Maroons in three before taking the Cup with a 3-1 series win over Toronto in the final. This massive 20" x 41" print is mounted in a black wood frame that measures approximately 30" x 50" and presented in an off-white matte with the caption "1935-1936 Detroit Red Wings, National Hockey League Winners, Stanley Cup Champions" along the bottom. Lewis, Syd Howe, Aurie, Adams, Smith, Took, Norris, Wally Kilrea, Giroux and Hec Kilrea are seated from left to right in the front row. Standing behind them are Walker, Young, McDonald, Kelly, Barry, Pettinger, Goodfellow, Sorrell, Bowman, Starr and Mattson in this magnificent photo taken by team photographer Albert E. Backlund. A spectacular tribute to the team that launched an American hockey dynasty.
