Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - June 2009

Phenomenal original photograph is one that we rarely see as it captures the 1924-25 Montreal Canadiens following their Stanley Cup championship the previous season. As "Champions of the World", the Habs sported uniforms with a world globe on the front and the "CH" logo on the sleeves. Included left to right are better-known Habs Billy Boucher, Howie Morenz, Aurele Joliat and Georges Vezina. Odie and Sprague Cleghorn are among the players to the right of Vezina. Stirring is the sight of the young Morenz and Joliat and the legendary Vezina. Rookie Morenz, at age 21, had led the Canadiens to the Cup the previous spring, firing a hat trick in a 6-1 win and adding another goal in the 3-0 clincher over the Calgary Tigers of the WCHL. The Canadiens in ‘24-25 repeated as NHL champions with Joliat and Morenz finishing 3-4 in league scoring behind Babe Dye and Cy Denneny, but had to surrender the Stanley Cup, losing three games to one to the Cougars in Victoria. Condition is an issue with this important piece as water damage on the right side and creasing over on the left has forced the framer to matte out Leo Dandurand at the left and Sylvio Mantha over on the right side of the line-up. Four of the players have been identified on the photo in red ink. Leave it as is or have it restored or re-matted. Measures 20" x 26" in a newer wood frame under glass.
