Classic collection of six ancient award medals, presented to all-round athlete T. L. Tom Paton for his prowess at the once-popular sport of snowshoeing. Paton, an early member of the famous Montreal AAA athletic club, was a snowshoe champion, as well as an accomplished early ice hockey goalie. The Montreal Amateur Athletic Association came into existence June 1881 and began as a confederation of three sporting clubs: The Montreal Snow Shoe Club, The Montreal Bicycle Club, and The Montreal Lacrosse Club. This important collection of heavymulti-section Sterling silver snowshoe medals awarded to Paton includes: 1) 1882 MAAA 1 Mile, 2nd Prize medal, dated Feb. 11th, 1882 with Won by T. L. Paton engraved on the reverse with the winged wheel MAAA design at the top. 2) 1884 MAAA Cross Country Steeple Chase medal with MAAA logo and initals at the top, named on the back T. L. Paton. 3) 1882 Le Canadien medal awarded to T. L. Paton for the Black River Steeple Chase. 4) 1883 Montreal Carnival medal for the King of the Hurdle snowshoe event with reverse engraved Won by T. L. Paton, Jan. 27/83. 5) Gold and silver cross medal for the Old Members Race marked Won by T. L. Paton, Feb. 12/86. 6) Star-shaped medal in silver for the Montreal Steeple Chase, named to Paton on the front. Overall, in very good to excellent condition with expected patina and aging to the ribbons. An important Montreal sporting collection from an innovator of the early game of ice hockey.
