Hockey Memorabilia Auction - Spring 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/10/2008
A solid VG-EX card picturing the mop-haired Cecil "Babe" Dye in his wool Toronto St. Patricks uniform. Dye was a halfback for the Toronto Argonauts and such a good baseball player that Connie Mack offered him the extraordinary salary of $25,000 to join his Philadelphia Athletics team in 1921. His real career was in professional hockey. This is Babe's rookie card found within the 1923 Patterson V145-1 set. Soft corners and a short, diagonal crease up in the top left keep this card from a higher mark. Slabbed by PSA who have awarded a grade of VG-EX 4. The highest graded Dye Rookie on the registry is a 5. HOF 1970.
