Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - October 2007

Despite limited playing time during most of his seven years in the
Montreal Canadiens organization, Rick Chartraw has his name engraved
four times on the Stanley Cup, thanks to being a member of one of
hockey’s greatest dynasties. This is the memento Rick received
following the ‘78-79 season, the Habs claiming the Prince of Wales
Trophy for finishing atop the regular season Wales Conference
standings with 52 wins and 115 points, 15 better than runner-up
Boston. Dryden and Larocque combined to win a third consecutive
Vezina Trophy while Bob Gainey picked up his second of four straight
Selke awards as the NHL’s top defensive forward. Guy Lafleur made it
five straight seasons with 50 or more goals and come playoff time,
the Canadiens skated to their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup title.
Rick Chartraw’s personal Prince of Wales trophy here includes his
given name, “Raymond Chartraw”, engraved on a plaque applied to one
side of the 2-inch high wooden base, while “NHL Champions Montreal
Canadiens 1978-79” is inscribed on another. Four silver-plated
hockey sticks rise up from the base to support a cup with removable
lid, giving the trophy an overall height of 13”. Moderate tarnish/
silver loss are to mention, along with the fact that it’s hard to
imagine the Canadiens ever assembling another team like the potent
squads of the late-1970s.
