Overtime Christmas Auction #9
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/5/2006
The donator of sports’ most recognizable trophy appears on these two fascinating pieces, both from 1902 and a time after Lord Stanley had returned to England, having donated the Stanley Cup in 1893 while Governor General of Canada. The holder of many titles during his lifetime, his image on a 9 1/2” in diameter fluted plate has “Earl Derby K.G. Guild Mayor” beneath it and is joined by an image of Guild Hall, while “Sept 1902 Preston Guild” are on a banner above. A rather large chip at 8 o’clock is not what you’ll look at – Lord Stanley’s photo is! Meanwhile, a 1 1/4” coin with its original albeit tattered box pictures him and his wife on one side, the words encircling them reading “the Earl of Derby K.G. Guild Mayor of Preston and The Countess of Derby.” Rare stuff of a man whose legacy will live on forever.
