Overtime Christmas Auction #9
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/5/2006
Serious piece of Canadian football history celebrating the 1898 Rough Riders victory over Ottawa College by the score of 11 to 1 to capture the Canadian Rugby Union (CRU) Senior Championship, eleven years before the awarding of the first Grey Cup in 1909. This little pinback button measures 1 1/4” in diameter and has a patent date of 1896 on the reverse. It was on September 9, 1897 that the Ottawa Football Club was re-christened the Ottawa Rough Riders and their next championship title came in 1898. The paper-backed pin reads in part “Buttons made by the Whitehead and Hoag Co., Newark, N.J.”. The pinback display the team’s colours, red and black, in circles on the outside edge. Inside these circles is a gentleman leashing the team mascot, a bulldog named “Bill”. The front of the pin also has text which reads “Ottawa Rough Riders Champions”. The red colour on the outside edge is pale and worth mentioning, but overall, this 100+ year old treasure has survived in excellent condition. An important item of Canadian Football history which would be a worthy and welcome addition to the finest of collections!
