Overtime Christmas Auction #9
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/5/2006
It was in 1909 that Albert George Grey, the fourth Earl and Canada’s ninth Governor General donated a trophy for the “Amateur rugby championship of Canada.” The trophy would later become popularized as the Grey Cup and be acknowledged as the symbol of Canadian professional football supremacy. This one-page letter appears to be dated 1871 but could also be 1891 and was written by Grey to a Senator Edwards or Edmunds. It thanks him for information sent to Grey and is signed in fountain pen “A Grey”. “1311 K Street, Washington” is printed on the 4 1/2” by 7” thick paper letterhead. Sensational piece for CFL historians will be accompanied by a photo on paper stock of “Lord Grey” and a certificate of authenticity from “The Gallery of History, Inc.”
