Overtime Christmas Auction #9
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/5/2006
Two men who “rescued” the Chicago Black Hawks and with time helped turn them into a Stanley Cup winner each penned their signatures on a Chicago Stadium Corporation check. James D. Norris, who with his father had acquired the Detroit Red Wings in 1933 and won three Stanley Cups, joined forces with partner Arthur Wirtz and assumed ownership of the Black Hawks in 1946, building the team into a valuable franchise. Norris’ fountain pen signature is on a check dated October 26, 1939 while Wirtz’ big flowing fountain pen sig is from a couple of years earlier; October 23, 1937. Both Norris and Wirtz are Hockey Hall of Fame “builders” who left their mark on the hockey world.
