Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Another in the long line of Autograph models produced by the sporting goods giant, Spalding starting selling sticks featuring the signatures of pro hockey players in the early-1900s, and despite the popularity of the player’s featured, surviving examples are nearly impossible to locate. We have a highly desirable Howie Morenz example that most likely hails from the late-1920s, manufactured in the style seen since the 1910s. At just over 50” in length and sporting an especially thick shaft, the heavy one-piece stick has a “Howie Morenz” facsimile signature burned into one side of the blade, encompassed by “Spalding” above and “Autograph” below. Despite exhibiting heavy use, the stick survives admirably, and displays well including the branding.
As mentioned, the stick has seen thorough use, with heavy wear to the blade especially the underside which has been ground-down somewhat, with the bottom portion of “Autograph” worn away. There is also a strand of black tape over the knob along with tape over the heel section to rectify a crack, with three additional cracks that begin at the toe and run towards the center of the blade.
