Team Canada 1972 was the clear-cut choice as Canada’s “Team of the Century” in a poll conducted by the Canadian Press. This substantial trophy was presented to Team Canada 1972 star Gordon “Red” Berenson to commemorate the November 2000 unveiling of the historic monument dedicated to the team at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Attractive and substantial marble-base award stands 13 1/2” tall and features English and French plaques on either side of the award, which was presented by the Royal Canadian Mint. Silver-coloured maple leaf atop the heavy marble base has the Mint’s commemorative 25th anniversary silver dollar set in the middle. Text on the English side reads “Award presented by the Royal Canadian Mint to: Red Berenson - #15. A signed LOA from Red Berenson will accompany.
In wonderful condition with a maker’s sticker affixed to the felt underside, the mounted maple leaf exhibits heavy toning/yellowing, with considerable wear to the inserted coin. The maple leaf also moves slightly, which in no way diminishes this historic award’s display value.
