Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
From the second set of team photos issued by CCM in the early-1930s, we have a Montreal Canadiens team picture from the 1933-34 Brown Border set, with this example team-signed. At approx 8 ¾” x 11” and affixed to the cardboard Foster Hewitt advertising card that accompanied the set, 17 dark ink signatures are present, with the majority signing over his respective image. Highlighted by desirable signatures from HOFers Howie Morenz, Aurel Joliat and Sylvio Mantha, along with Lorne Chabot, Pit Lepine, Armand Mondou and others, the Morenz is light but decipherable, especially considering the dark background. The Joliat displays well and is lighter in sections, with the majority showing varying degrees of fading but all readable, with a few remaining bolder.
The remaining signers include Johnny Gagnon, Marty Burke, Paul Marcel Raymond, Leo Bourgeault, Gerald Carson, Jack Riley, Sammy Godin, Wildor Larochelle and Georges Mantha, as well as staff members Davis and Dugal. The premium itself exhibits heavy wear, with creases, edge tears, toning, paper loss and tape residue, with heavier glue residue over most of the reverse, with most of the cardboard advertising stock torn away. It should also be noted that the team photo originates from our consignors father, who played pro hockey in the 1940s, with the signatures obtained by him in his youth.
