Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. Totaling 3, these particular pucks were used by Fred Barrett and Jude Drouin to score the Minnesota North Stars 133rd and 138th goals of the 1972-73 season respectively, along with a puck used by Don Lever to score the Vancouver Canucks 208th goal of the 1973-74 season. The two North Stars goals occurred in an 8-1 thrashing of the Islanders on Jan 13th 1973, while the Lever goal was one of 7 in a 7-0 trouncing of the Golden Seals at home on March 31st 1974. An LOA for the Barrett puck along with a COR from MeiGray will accompany.
Regarding condition, the rubberized North Stars logo on the Barrett puck exhibits some light discolouration, while the Goal Puck Program label remains fairly clean with a few dark marks present. The rubberized North Stars logo on the Drouin example includes some light toning, with the Goal Puck Program label exhibiting some toning and marks. Lastly, the Canucks rubberized logo on the Lever puck has faded in spots with some crazing, with the Goal Puck Program label exhibiting a number of dark marks and discolouration.
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-1973 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
