Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
From the glory days of the Boston Bruins in the 1930s/40s when the club claimed a pair of Stanley Cup championships in just three years, we have a pair of team-signed items including a program, along with a pair of panorama photographs from team banquets in 1939 and 1940. All the more special as these items originate from the personal collection of Boston legend Milt Schmidt and were acquired directly from the Schmidt family, the program was for a March 20th benefit game at Boston Garden between the Bruins and Bruin Cubs in 1934, with 6 signing in pencil, including Barry and Clapper. The second signed item is a multi-signed sheet of address paper affixed to a scrapbook page (along with other newspaper clippings including a team photo), with 10 signatures including Schmidt, along with fellow HOFers Shore, Cowley, Bauer, Dumart and Dit Clapper. An LOA from the Schmidt family will accompany.
The program is a 5 ½” x 9” fold-over affair, with the rosters listed, with the additional signers Joe Lamb, Alex Smith, Don Smillie and Myles Lane (signing twice). There’s some staining, with small tears along the top and bottom of the fold. The scrapbook page is approx 10” x 12” with the signed sheet 3” x 5 ½”, with all signatures in blue pencil crayon, including the aforementioned HOFers, along with Getliffe, Crawford, Portland and Mel “Sudden Death” Hill. Dated to the 1938-39 season based on both the signatures and the affixed newsprint team photo, the autos all display well, with expected wear including toning to the scrapbook page. Both banquet photos show the full team and management along with others at the Copley Plaza, dressed to the nines and set to feast! The 1939 photo has been framed to full dimensions of approx 10” x 19”, with the particulars listed in white text, with the full team visible including Shore and Ross. The photo shows heavy wear with portions along the base affixed to the glass. There’s also some mold on the inside of the glass, with heavy wear to the frame itself, with the backing almost detached. The 1940 photo is just under 10” x 20”, with the full team and supporters again pictured and looking dapper, with Ross, Clapper and others pictured at the head table. This photo also shows heavy wear, with bends, creases and corner wear.
