Named to the NHL Second All-Star Team during his first NHL season in 1963-64 – something rare for a rookie – Jacques Laperriere was also the Calder Memorial winner as the league’s freshest new face. His sophomore season would prove to be even more successful, selected for the NHL First All-Star Team while also being crowned a Stanley Cup champion for the first of six times during his career. A total of 11 prosperous seasons would be spent with the Bleu Blanc Rouge which would include a James Norris win in 1966, with HOF enshrinement occurring for the Bearn native in 1987.
We have a stunning Montreal Canadiens wool sweater that was worn by Laperriere during the mid-1960s. With no labeling remaining along the collar and measuring-out across the upper reverse to roughly a modern size 44, the vintage garment has been styled with the forever classic “CH” team crest placed over the upper chest and fully administered in tackle twill, and accented with solid blue sleeve and verso numbers with red trim. The fight strap has been cut and removed, with reinforced elbows utilized along with six-eyelet configuration on tie-neck construction.
We should note that the placement of both the team crest and numbers allow dating of the sweater to the mid-1960s. The wool material remains soft and supple, with the off-white body remaining clean, with a pair of very faint stains over the lower front along with a second tiny stain near the right sleeve’s number. There is a dark stick mark over the reverse number, with pilling over each sleeve. Surviving in absolutely wonderful condition, this vintage wool would serve as the center piece in almost any collection.
