Remembered as one of the top achievements in Canadian hockey history, the Whitby Dunlops were selected to represent Canada at the 1958 World Championships in Oslo Norway, after winning the 1957 Allan Cup as the senior amateur hockey champions of Canada. After the disappointment at the 1956 Olympics and a boycott of the '57 World Championships, the Dunlops brought the world title back to Canada! This absolutely stunning yellow and black Whitby Dunlops wool sweater was worn at the tournament by Edward Redmond. With no labeling present, the sweater features a large felt over felt team crest with heat-pressed name and accents, with four highly detailed felt maple leaves running across the upper chest. The maple leaves are again repeated over the reverse with five spread across the upper back below “Canada”, while the thick felt numbers are affixed with zig-zag pattern attachment. Worn throughout the tournament, we should also note that the Canadians embarked on a 14-game exhibition tour of Europe that preceded the tournament.
Born in the historic hockey town of Cobalt in 1923, Edward Redmond was a standout in the old PCHL shortly after the war, with his first taste of professional hockey a 13-game stop in the AHL with the Philadelphia Rockets in 1946-47. Seasons were then spent in San Francisco and Fresno before appearing in the QSHL with the Aces in 1950-51. Beginning in 1955, Redmond would be convinced by Wren Blair to play senior hockey with the Whitby Dunlops, a relationship that fostered an Allan Cup championship in 1957, along with the World Championship in 1958. After retiring from hockey, Redmond would spend time volunteering as a coach and manager in both hockey and lacrosse, later serving as both an executive and president of the Peterborough Petes, spending over 20 years with the famous club.
Former Whitby mayor and Dunlops player Bob Attersley has signed the jersey over the front hem, with the signature bleeding into the material somewhat. Measuring-out to roughly a size 48, the yellow and red accents are still bold and bright, with what appears to be the original tie string along the collar. Heavy wear to the team crest with a tear and some material loss is exhibited, with a few of the heat-pressed letter and accents starting to flake/peel. There are also a few small holes present over the upper sleeves, front hem and lower reverse, with larger examples over the elbow sections. We should also note some minor salting/oxidation of the metal grommets on the tie-neck, with a few team repairs present as well.
