Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. Totaling 4, these particular pucks were all used to score goals for the Detroit Red Wings during the 1972-73 and 1973-74 NHL seasons. We have the pucks used to score the Red Wings 232nd goal of the 1972-73 season by Thommie Bergman on March 17th, the 76th goal of the 1973-74 season by Nick Libett on Dec 2nd (assisted by Bill Collins & Marcel Dionne), the 169th goal of the 1973-74 season by Bill Hogaboam on Feb 3rd (assisted by Pierre Jarry and Larry Johnson) and the 204th Red Wings goal of the 1973-74 season by Mickey Redmond (signed) on March 2nd 1974 (assisted by Bill Hogaboam & Pierre Jarry). Both an LOA and COR from MeiGray for the Bergman puck will accompany.
Regarding condition, the rubberized Red Wings logo on the Bergman puck is dark with “Detroit” obscured, with residue present from a previously affixed sticker, while the Goal Puck Program label has heavy wear and marks including a few creases. The Sabres logo on the Libett puck is slightly off-center, with heavy toning, with the Goal Puck Program label also exhibiting dark marks and toning, with a few creases present. The Red Wings logo on the Hogaboam puck is dark and stained with a small section missing, with some heavy discolouration to the Goal Puck Program label along with numerous dark marks. Lastly, the rubberized Red Wings logo on the Redmond puck has some dark spots along with material loss, with the Goal Puck Program label fairly clean, with Redmond signing the label along the bottom portion.
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-1973 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
