Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. Totaling 4, these particular goal pucks all originate from the 1973-74 season and were used to score goals for the Chicago Black Hawks. We have 3 Jim Pappin goal pucks including examples used to score the Black Hawks 63rd goal of the season on Nov 28th 1973 (assisted by Dennis Hull and Dick Redmond), the 116th goal of the season on Jan 2nd 1974 (assisted by Dennis Hull and Dick Redmond) and the 217th goal of the season on March 9th 1974 (assisted by Dennis Hull & Stan Mikita). We also have a puck used to score the 153rd goal of the season by Darcy Rota on Jan 20th 1974 (assisted by Jim Pappin).
Regarding condition, the rubberized Black Hawks logo on the Rota puck has some dark discolouration, while the Goal Puck Program label has a number of dark marks present, especially at the center. The rubberized Canucks logo on the March 9th Pappin puck is off center slightly with some toning, while the Goal Puck Program label exhibits toning with dark marks, with a few minor edge slices. Next, the Rubberized Black Hawks logo on the Nov 28th Pappin puck exhibits some darkening, with the Goal Puck Program label also toned with a number of marks present. Lastly, the rubberized Black Hawks logo on the Jan 2nd Pappin puck exhibits some toning, with the Goal Puck Program label heavily toned/discoloured, with a few minor slices along the side.
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-1973 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
