The Canadiens won 59 of their regular season games that season, losing only 10, and tying 11, giving them 129 points and the status of Norris Division champions as well as Prince of Wales Conference regular season champions. Montreal earned a bye to the Quarterfinals, as Division winners, and disposed of the Detroit Red Wings in 5 games. They dispatched the Toronto Maple Leafs in 4 straight in the Semifinals and beat the Boston Bruins in 6 in the Stanley Cup Finals to claim their third of four-consecutive championships. Gainey won his first of four Frank J. Selke trophies in 1977-78 and registered 9 points in 15 playoff games played.
Standing a majestic 13” and mounted to a wooden base with green felt underside, the names of the men who made it happen are engraved in three rows beneath the Canadiens’ executives, with “Club de Hockey Canadien” and “1977-78” engraved above. Hailing from his personal collection, a signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany this majestic Stanley Cup championship trophy.
Exhibiting light surface wear throughout, with visible tarnishing spots/areas from the top to the bottom of the lower barrel on the back of the award vertically along the joint, there are a number of small scratches visible on various areas of the trophy. There is a small dent on the lower front ring of the trophy which overall still displays beautifully. Gainey has signed the underside of the base in black marker, with noticeable shelf wear to the green felt, which also has a small piece of masking tape with "Bob" handwritten on it.
