Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
One of hockey’s best defensive forwards throughout the 1970s/80s, Bob Gainey spent his entire 16-season career with the Montreal Canadiens, winning 5 Stanley Cups along with the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1979 as the top performer in the playoffs. The 1992 HOF inductee also represented Canada at the Canada Cup and World Championships. From the 1976 Canada Cup, the world's first true international best-on-best, we have the Team Canada jersey Gainey wore, with this specimen originating from Frantisek Pospisil, as Gainey and the Czech player exchanged jerseys after the last game of the final. A somewhat faded AK label is affixed to the collar, with the important sweater measuring out to roughly a size 46. Styled with the iconic half maple leaf team crest with “Canada” across the chest in heat-pressed red vinyl, all additional identifiers are in matching material, including “34” over the sleeves and verso, and "Gainey" over the upper reverse. An LOA will accompany this international prize.
There are a few marks over the front, along with burns and light red paint transfer over and near the right sleeve’s number. A few additional marks are visible over the lower reverse, with minor staining/discolouration on the front right shoulder. We should also note a bit of red colour saturation over the lower sleeves – more prominently on the left, with this most likely occurring from the red gloves Gainey wore throughout the tournament.
