Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
First sent to the Montreal Canadiens to replace veteran superstar Newsy Lalonde, Aurele Joliat would spend his entire career in “la Sainte-Flanelle”, and serve as the backbone of the Habs for over 15 seasons. The Mighty Atom also officiated Maurice Richard’s very first NHL contest, in 1942. A trio of vintage Aurele Joliat photos are up for your consideration, with each originating from the collection of the former curator of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Lefty Reid. Each picturing the star in his Habs uniform, the first photo is 2 ¾” x 5 ¾”, affixed to cardboard stock. The second photo was produced by Rice and is just under 7 ½” x 9 ½”, while the third is 7 ½” x 9 ¾”. All three photos have his name over the reverse along with inventory numbers from the original HOF.
The 2 ¾” x 5 ¾” photo exhibits a clean surface, with wear to the cardboard backing. The 7 ½” x 9 ½” photo is somewhat thicker stock and shows great clarity, with just a bit of minor waving/warping along the top of the image, with this inconsequential and mentioned for the strictest accuracy. The 7 ½” x 9 ¾” photo is somewhat “rolled”, with a small 1” edge tear along the left side and toning to the reverse.
Taking what he described as "a basement full of old sticks and pucks" to create a world class museum after the retirement of the Hall of Fame’s first curator, Bobby Hewitson, in 1967, Maurice H. "Lefty" Reid was raised in Leamington, Ontario, and began volunteering at the Hockey Hall of Fame after moving to Toronto where he worked as a sports layout editor, at The Toronto Telegram. Serving as secretary for the Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee as well as curator during his tenure at the Hall, Reid also held many positions with ASMHOF (Association of Halls of Fame and Museums) including President and Vice President. Later honoured with a key to the city of Peterborough after voluntarily helping to create a new sports hall of fame in the locale, Reid was honoured with induction into the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame, in 2006.
