Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/29/2023
Referred to by collectors as Cowan Tiles, these 6” by 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public, and despite most apparently being destroyed, a fairly large number has survived. “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” is printed on the cork backing of each and we offer a partial set of 68 tiles. Included by team, there are 16 tiles for Montreal; Goyette, Fontinato, JC Tremblay, G Tremblay, Berenson, Geoffrion, Hicke, Beliveau, Talbot, Richard, Rousseau, Provost, Gauthier, Maniago, Backstrom and Johnson. There are 15 tiles for Toronto; Shack, Armstrong, Bower, Baun, Keon, Pulford, Mahovlich, Nevin, MacMillan, Kelly, Litzenberger, Brewer, Horton, Harris and Stewart. There are 15 tiles for New York; Balon, Harvey, Patrick, Howell, Langlois, Worsley, Prentice, Ingarfield, Horvath, Ratelle, Bathgate (spotting), Cahan, Hadfield, Hampson and Hebenton. There are 8 tiles for Detroit; Sawchuk, Howe, Fonteyne, Barkley, Riggen, Pronovost, Young and Ullman. There are 6 tiles for Boston; Williams, Burns, Spencer, Connolly, Hicks and Mohns. There are 8 tiles for Chicago; Wharram, Hull, Nesterenko, Fleming, Mikita (cracked, with surface chip), Balfour, Hay and Murphy. The majority of the tiles are in like-new condition and come in their original individual boxes, with just a few sporting tiny blemishes.
