Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
We have a wonderful specimen that holds a special and historical place, with a vintage Wayne Gretzky nameplate that most likely sat on the back of the all-time greatest hockey player during only his second NHL season of 1980-81… magical! The nameplate’s history and its acquirement is almost as interesting as the nameplate itself. According to the accompanying LOA from Shawn Chaulk, this Gretzky nameplate was purchased from a former Oilers staffer (who had a box full of nameplates) many years ago, along with a 1981 Anderson nameplate. At 4” x 21” and produced from a single piece of white mesh folded-over and hemmed, “Gretzky” has been expertly embroidered in royal blue, with absolutely no unsightly wear or damage.
This style of nameplate was used for only half a season, from October to December 31st during the 1980-81 season, with the Oilers known for recycling their jerseys and nameplates during the early-1980s. It is also important to note that when Shawn purchased both nameplates, the 1981 Anderson example was for a matching-season jersey already in his possession, with a slash mark through both the jersey and nameplate that perfectly matched, providing 100% confirmation that both were originally “married”.
