Bobby Orr and the Boston Bruins soared to the Hub's first Stanley Cup win in 29 years on a magical May day in the spring of 1970. The iconic and immortal image of Orr flying through the air was the exclamation point on the legendary defenseman's spectacular overtime winner that sealed a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Blues and secured Boston's first Cup since 1941. Offered is Wayne Cashman's 1969-70 Boston Bruins Stanley Cup championship gold and diamond ring, a dazzling memento of a wondrous championship season. The Bruins followed up a hard-fought six-game win over the Rangers in the opening round with a four-game sweep of the Black Hawks. Cash scored two of his five playoff goals against St. Louis in the final as the Bruins reeled off three straight lopsided wins. The Blues offered more of a fight in Game 4, forcing overtime to set the stage for Orr's dramatic goal. Orr claimed the first of his two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP. This substantial 14K gold creation by Balfour displays "Boston Bruins, World Champions" in raised gold lettering on the bezel. The tableau displays a dozen diamonds. Though not original to the ring, these were long ago replaced by Balfour on behalf of Cashman, one of the Bruins players who took the company up on its offer to make the change not long after the rings were issued because the onyx setting for the original single diamond kept breaking. Three of the slightly smaller outer diamonds are chipped, including the top left corner and the bottom right corner, with the smallest chip on the one above the latter. "W. Cashman" is stamped on a banner on the right shank with a Bruins Hub crest in relief below it and Cash's number "12" stamped on a circle at the bottom. The left shank displays "1970" engraved on a banner above a Stanley Cup in relief surrounded by banners with the results of the Bruins' three playoff series. Cashman's proud wear is plain to see here with the results of the first two rounds completely worn off, though "Bruins 4 Blues 0" remains plain to see on the one on the right. "Balfour" stamp is still legible inside the band of the size 9 1/2 ring though the "14K" marking has worn away. Included is the ring's original Balfour presentation box, though the smoothed lettering on the surface of the ring shows that it was worn much more than it was stored. The first of Wayne Cashman's two Bruins Stanley Cup championship rings, this amazing piece comes with his signed letter of authenticity.
