This 1980 Olympic silver medal for ice hockey was awarded to the legendary Valeri Kharlamov, a member of both the Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame. While silver was a huge disappointment for the USSR at Lake Placid, the fact remains that it took a miracle for a young American squad to deny the late Kharlamov and his teammates yet another Olympic gold. Offered along with Valeri's 1980 Olympic silver medal is a wonderful collection of items saved by Valeri from his experience in Lake Placid, including his athlete's credentials and his participation diploma. The late Kharlamov's 1980 Lake Placid Olympic silver medal is housed in its original and complete Tiffany-marked presentation case, which has been preserved in excellent condition. One side of the gorgeous silver medal nestled inside has "Ice Hockey" engraved below "Lake Placid 1980" along with the official Lake Placid Olympic logo and pine cones and branches in relief. The other side of this 3.25-inch-diameter medal features "XIII Olympic Winter Games" and the Olympic rings with a hand holding a flaming torch aloft with a mountain range in the background. The edge is stamped "Tiffany & Co, Sterling Silver" and dated "1979". The medal has its original light blue-and-white ribbon, and displays some minor surface scratches, minor finish loss at the edges and small spots of pitting, but overall, it is quite presentable and certainly historic. Regardless of these flaws, this historic 1980 Olympic silver medal is complete and intact, just as it was presented to Kharlamov in Lake Placid along with his official Olympic diploma, which is also included. Signed by IOC president Lord Killanin, this remarkable and rarely-seen Olympic document has bluish-tint stains from the inside of the case in which it was originally houses (not included). The diploma is 12.5" x 13" in size. Valeri's athlete credentials are in the form of a laminated photo pass, complete with metal chain, and displays a lighter ballpoint signature from the deceased Hockey Hall-of-Famer. A signed letter of provenance from the family of the late Valeri Kharlamov will accompany the historic award and included items. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve.
