Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Enamored by the fledgling game of ice hockey, Frederick Arthur Stanley – then Governor General of Canada – purchased a small trophy bowl in 1892 for ten guineas that would bear his name and become known as the Stanley Cup, with presentation originally designated to the amateur hockey champions of Canada. Never actually witnessing a championship game for the trophy that bear his name, offered here is this cabinet photo of Stanley that dates to 1881. Sure to be a coveted piece, a 3 1/4" x 4 1/2" cabinet affair of the man that would donate hockey's most famous trophy is applied to a 7" x 10" sheet with a printed design around the border. Warped due to age and humidity, a line beneath the image reads "The Right Hon. F. A. Stanley" while a second one reads "From Photograph by the London Stereoscopic Company, 110, Regent Street". Remaining in overall excellent condition other than the previously mentioned warping and to be expected toning, the photo shows a bit of surface wear near the top right corner but still offers a crystal clear image of a younger-than-were-used-to-seeing Stanley in the days before his appointment of Canada's Governor General.
