Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/24/2021
Forever changing how the game is played, Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers rewrote the records books during the 1980s, averaging over 420 goals a season from 1982 to 1985. While no previous team had eclipsed the 400 goal plateau, Wayne himself would register over 200 points in four different seasons. Spanning from roughly 1980 to 1985, this important historical collection of 35mm colour and b&w Edmonton Oilers negatives totals approx 1,429, with roughly 1,028 that include Gretzky (620 colour and 408 black and white). Four slides are also included, with three showing Wayne with the Stanley Cup in 1984. The total breakdown is approx 893 colour negatives and 536 b&w negatives. Highlights include over a dozen images of Wayne with his 1,000th career point stick, a sequence of goal-scoring images from Gretzky’s 29th consecutive point game (Dec 5, 1982 vs Los Angeles), images of Wayne with Team Canada (1981 Canada Cup), Wayne receiving an award in Feb of 1981, Wayne posing with the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophies in 1982 and more.
Additional highlights include images of Wayne’s horse, shots from Gretzky’s 20th birthday, Wayne displaying his endorsed Mr Big chocolate bar, an image from his 1,000th point night, images of a “Gretzky Sucks” baseball cap, Wayne with Rick Hansen, and on crutches after foot surgery, numerous images of Wayne meeting Kirk Douglas and more. The majority of the negatives remain in excellent condition with no issues, with just a few marked, with circles drawn on desirable subjects.
