Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
Issued to Fall Classic victors and participants including league officials and executives, Hillerich & Bradsby World Series black bats were originally brown in colour, and were first given in 1934. The familiar black finish begun in 1938, with the last set of black bats presented in 1998. We have an example from 1971 for your collecting interests, celebrating the world championship of the Pittsburgh Pirates. At 35”, the solid black Louisville features a perfect center brand stamping, with “Pittsburgh Pirates World Champions 1971” to the right. Team members with H&B contracts have their names appearing in signature form, while those without contracts appear in block letter form. All team members are listed, including standouts Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski and Willie Stargell.
All gold-foil stampings remain intact, with some minor loss to the left arrow encompassing “1971”. The black finish remains in beautiful condition, with just very light wear to the end of the barrel and along the edge of the knob and handle. There are also a few small blemishes on the barrel, but nothing to detract from the bat’s exceptional display quality.
