The first senior amateur championships won by a New Brunswick club, the Moncton Hawks would claim back-to-back Allan Cup championships during the early-1930s, with Percy Nicklin coaching the squad to victory in 1934. From his personal collection, we have a group of 1933-34 Moncton Hawks Allan Cup champions relics that were presented to Nicklin. First, we have a 1934 CAHA Allan Cup medal in it’s original presentation box, followed by a 1934 International Hockey Championship medal in it’s original presentation box and a 1934 City of Toronto medal presented for “Amateur Hockey Championships of the World”. Lastly, we have 1933-34 CCM Allan Cup Winners pocket knife. An LOA from the Nicklin family will accompany.
The 1934 CAHA Allan Cup medal is 1 ¼” x 1 ¾” with attached ribbon, with “Allan Cup” and “C.A.H.A.” in blue enameling over the front along with a raised generic player, with “Moncton Hawks” and “P.H. Nicklin coach 1934” engraved over the reverse, with "Bailey 10K" stamped along the base. There is surface wear over the front and to the enameling, with the reverse fairly clean, with the original 2 ½” x 2 ½” Bailey & Co. box included. The 1934 International Hockey Championship medal is 1 ¼” x 1 ½”, with detached ribbon segment, with a hockey scene and enameled crests over the front. The reverse has “Moncton Hawks” and “P.H. Nicklin coach 1934” engraved, with "Bailey 10K" stamped along the base. The original 2 ½” x 3” Bailey & Co. box is included. The 1934 City of Toronto medal presented for “Amateur Hockey Championships of the World” is 1 ¾” x 2 ¼”, with the Toronto coat of arms over the front and the particulars engraved over the reverse including “P.H. Nicklin”, “Moncton Hawks” and “1934”. The medal shows light surface wear over the front and reverse. Lastly, the Art Deco pocket knife is 2 ¾” in length, with “Allan Cup Winners 1933-34” engraved, with light wear present.
The Percy Nicklin International Hockey Collection
Born in Simcoe, Ontario, just before the close of the 19th century and hailing from a Scottish family, Percy Harold Nicklin rose to hockey prominence coaching the Moncton Hawks to back-to-back Allan Cup championships as the top senior amateur club in Canada, in 1933 and 1934. Moving on to unlikely hockey locale England in 1935, Nicklin took the reins of the Richmond Hawks before assuming coaching duties with the ENL's Harringay Racers and Harringay Greyhounds. Nicklin would again put his magic behind the bench to work in 1936, when he and international hockey legend Bunny Ahearne built a strong Great Britain national team that would defeat Canada at the 1936 Winter Olympics to claim the gold medal. The successful Nicklin would go on to lead Great Britain to further glory, winning consecutive World Championships, in 1937 and 1938.
