A veteran of 343 National Hockey League contests and 511 World Hockey Association games, Paul Shmyr would captain the Edmonton Oilers of the WHA and the Minnesota North Stars of the NHL during his career and made trips to the Stanley Cup Finals in both 1971 with Chicago and 1981 with Minnesota. A three (3) time WHA First-Team All-Star and inducted as an inaugural inductee into the World Hockey Association Hall of Fame in 2010, offered here is this Dallas Black Hawks jersey worn by Shmyr between 1967 and 1969. A lightweight durene knit garment originally made by General Athletic, the brand's label that was once affixed inside the reverse hem has been lost to time along with most of the Gunzo's and size tags that are sewn into the inner collar. Measuring out to roughly a modern day size "52" for its effort, the jersey is able to be dated to the time period of 1967 to 1969 by the bit of the Gunzo's tag that remains in the collar. Displaying the company's original Berwyn address that was changed after a fire in 1970, the company subsequently moved to a River Forest location in Illinois, with this address then listed on their labeling. Based on this, the jersey would have been worn in either the 1967-68 Dallas Black Hawks inaugural season or in their 1968-69 CHL championship season, with the possibility of it also seeing action in both years as well based on the heavy wear that is observed throughout. Decorated over the front with the famous Indian head team crest proudly sported by the NHL’s Windy City club and distinguishable from the jerseys worn by Chicago by the gorgeous “D” tomahawk patches over each shoulder, both emblems featured beautiful chain-stitched embroidery throughout their entirety with the front crest showing damage from heavy use. Having had the distinguished alternate captain's "A" sewn on over the left breast, the sleeves and verso of the jersey have had Shmyr's number "6" added to them in single layer black tackle twill numerals with popped stitches present on all three (3) numbers, the largest concentration of them found affecting the number on the back. Void of any fight strap on the interior, the jersey displays heavy game-wear through numerous team repairs of various sizes over the front, reverse and both sleeves that total out to 30+ by our count, some heavy in spots staining, collar bleed under the collar, heavy thinning of the material near the cuffs, board burns, coloured board paint transfers, discolouration, some light stick marks and an unrepaired hole through the first layer of material caused by popped seams at the bottom of the left elbow, some frayed threads are found on the interior as well along the edges of both elbow reinforcements.
